Prescription pain medications flung open the door to Dwayne’s addiction.
After a tragic accident with a hot water heater left him with second and third-degree burns, the pain pills hooked him.
“I was eating them like Skittles,” Dwayne says.
Unable to curb the addiction on his own, he used more and more. Until one day, he overdosed.
“My life was gone,” he says. “One ambulance man, he just kept telling the other one, ‘Pump him, pump him.’ They hit me with Narcan twice. Through the grace of God, I came back to life.”
Soon after, Dwayne was given the chance to come to CityTeam. But he was hesitant.
“I’m not going to lie — I didn’t want to come here,” he says. “But I’m glad that I made that choice. Honestly, this is the best choice I could ever make in my life.”
BRINGING OUT THE BEST
Dwayne found that the program at CityTeam demanded he go all-in, which he appreciates.
“That’s the good part about it — because they’re bringing the best out of you.”
Through CityTeam, Dwayne is gaining new computer skills, and the Learning Center helped him secure his birth certificate, social security card, and other important paperwork.
One of the most priceless parts of Dwayne’s time at CityTeam is finding and investing in a genuine community. “We all stick together. When some of the other guys feel like they want to relapse, they come talk to me. I tell them the same thing: If I can do it, you can do it,” he says.
RENEWED BY FAITH AND COMMUNITY
Starting a relationship with God and his community changed everything for Dwayne. Now, when trouble comes, he knows who he can turn to.
His new faith was tested when, eight months ago, his sister, niece, and brother all passed away back to back.
“My family was so scared I was going to relapse and take some pills,” Dwayne says. “But I didn’t do that. Through all three of my tragedies, the [CityTeam] staff comforted me. Anytime you need them, they’re right there. They’re like family.”
Today, Dwayne’s new goal is to go back to college and become a drug and alcohol counselor. He expresses gratitude for CityTeam for giving him a second chance at life.
“I recommend anybody, if they’re going through anything, come to CityTeam. Because CityTeam is definitely the place to go.”
