Community of Hope's Story

Community of Hope was founded 10 years ago as a program of AllOne Community Services. AllOne is the nonprofit that manages the outreach of the Church of North Portland, a collaboration of many of the churches located in North Portland. Community of Hope has grown over the years, renovated the building they leased from Red Sea Church and provided a beautiful, welcoming home for single parent families while supporting them in finding hope, healing, and stability while they healed from past trauma, built skills, and found jobs and homes.

However, as the program grew, AllOne found that they needed more support in fundraising and administration. The board began to look for a like-minded agency that might be willing to take over the management of Community of Hope. CityTeam, a Christian agency that served homeless families providing similar services, looked like a great match. Josh Hawk, the Executive Director of AllOne approached Lance Orton, the Executive Director of CityTeam and a friend, to discuss the possibility.

CityTeam's Story

Last May, CityTeam had their Gala (one day before Community of Hope’s) and floated the idea of a women’s shelter to complement their men’s shelter. They had a very enthusiastic response! It was both exciting and overwhelming. It brought Lance to his knees as he began to think about how he could pull this off! Finding a place and setting up a program was a bit overwhelming! Just then, he got Josh’s phone call asking him to meet to discuss the possibility of acquiring Community of Hope.

With a lot of excitement and discernment, CityTeam and AllOne prayed, negotiated, and did due diligence. Both boards decided to move Community of Hope from under AllOne’s umbrella to come under CityTeam’s.

CityTeam is grateful for...
  • A building to provide services to women and children.
  • A proven program we can build upon and expand.
  • Inheriting supports of Community of Hope committed to restoring the lives of local women and children.
CoH is grateful for...
  • Gaining fundraising and administration help.
  • Longer-term housing for women and children to maximize life impact.
  • Greater focus on residents securing living-wage jobs.
  • A different staffing model including live-in "interns" who have graduated from our program and wish to give back to the CityTeam community. This will cut expenses and provide relief for staff.
Together, we are grateful for...
  • Capacity to serve women overcoming addiction. CityTeam's men's program suggests an excellent success rate for women graduates in the future.
  • The addition of services for women without children in addition to 4-5 single moms with children.
  • A transition built on trust and a strong relationship.

What’s next?

  • December: AllOne Community Services Community of Hope is finding housing for the families they have most recently served and will close as of December 31. Their contract with the Joint Office of Homeless Services will end at that point, giving us greater flexibility in our programing model.
  • January: CityTeam Community of Hope will be closed while needed renovations will be made.
  • February: We will welcome new women and children into a beautiful facility and share Christ’s unconditional and redemptive love by caring for immediate needs and enabling lasting solutions.
