RISING FROM THE ASHES
After a devastating fire, meeting basic necessities became a struggle for Marisol and her family. She turned to CityTeam for support.
“We were hungry, without savings, and left with only the clothes on our bodies plus one hundred dollars in the bank,” says Marisol.
A house fire had destroyed all of her family’s belongings — and their hope. “I’ve never cried or lost my mind the way I did that day,” says Marisol. She calls that year “the hardest struggle of [her] life.”
If this devastation taught Marisol anything, it was that it’s okay to ask for help. So years down the road, when the family of five found themselves backed into another impossible situation, Marisol knew she could reach out to her community for support.
Marisol’s husband had just lost his job of 17 years. And after he found new employment, they let him go due to a decrease in available work. “We found ourselves struggling to pay rent and afford groceries,” says Marisol.
CITYTEAM’S PROVISION
Hope returned when Marisol heard about CityTeam’s Food Pantry and Pop-Up Closet. Close to home, the one-stop service gave Marisol food for the table and clothes for her kids. “I had just gotten a job but didn’t have any nice clothes to wear to work,” she says, “and the groceries helped me feed my family. We were in need of it all.”
On top of the nourishing food and clothing, Marisol’s family also received encouraging and hopeful spiritual counseling. Marisol’s life wasn’t changing just on the outside…
“I needed this to become a better mother, to become a better wife, and to just bring out the best in myself,” said Marisol.
A HUNGER FOR MORE THAN FOOD
“In the middle of the struggles, I felt very lonely and depressed,” says Marisol. She joined one of CityTeam’s Bible study groups and began finding joy in her life again. Though CityTeam, Marisol and her family began to thrive, not just survive.
“I was hungry to get closer to God and bond with my community,” says Marisol. “I needed this to become a better mother, to become a better wife, and to just bring out the best in myself… I’m forever grateful.”
From the ashes, Marisol and her family found more than food and shelter, but a place at CityTeam to belong and rebuild.
