Davis’ life in Hawaii wasn’t a postcard paradise.

As the oldest of four growing up in one of the most expensive states, he learned very quickly how to make do. “Everything was a struggle for us,” he says. “We did what we had to do to survive. All we had to rely on was our family.”

In Samoan culture, family is everything — challenges and all. His mom struggled with drugs. His dad sold them. And after a tragic loss, Davis found himself on that path toward addiction.

“My girlfriend died of natural causes when I was 19,” he says. “That’s when everything went crazy.”

Davis thought moving to the mainland would give him a clean slate.

“Nope. All I wanted to do was party. I never really thought I had a problem. Addiction started to take over my life.”

Davis started selling drugs — and eventually, it landed him in prison. But time behind bars wasn’t enough to wake him up.

“As an addict, you’re trying to play your cards right,” says Davis.

He said yes to a residential program for the first time, looking for a way out of another sentence. But it ended back in addiction.

“I thought, I tried it. I’m good. Maybe this is who I am,” he says.

It would still take some time before Davis learned he was so much more.

"Rock bottom doesn't mean it's the ending"

Davis tried to build a normal life. He got married and tried to step into a father role for his wife’s children. Slowly but surely, they both started using again.

“My marriage went down. I hit my rock bottom. But rock bottom doesn’t mean it’s the ending. Because the only way left is up.”

This time, Davis came to CityTeam and kickstarted his comeback.

Through the steady support at CityTeam, Davis graduated from the program. He’s now on staff at Urban Alchemy — a CityTeam partner that meets immediate needs and creates careers for people who’ve overcome homelessness.

“The more I progressed in the program, the more my head got cleared. I had to surrender and let God do His work in me. I could finally transition into being healthy. That’s what I love about CityTeam. You get to focus on you,” says Davis.

He describes community at CityTeam like “a family” — making him feel close to his Samoan culture.

“Just having a place where I can put my head down and not worry, man . . . that means the whole world. It just feels good to know you’re not being judged.”

From three meals a day to counseling to hands-on job-skills training, CityTeam provided Davis with the support he needed to see that he’s not a lost cause.

“I’m really thankful for CityTeam,” says Davis.
