Flora’s family was struggling to put healthy meals on the table. At CityTeam, she found the help she needed AND the community she was missing!
Making do with what little they had was routine for Flora and her family.
Without consistent income, her household felt the heavy burden of rising living costs. Even trying to feed her two children nutritious food proved to be a challenge. “I’d go to the grocery store and find that a couple of apples cost more than a fast food meal,” says Flora.
She was dropping her daughter off at school one day when she saw a CityTeam sign posted for food pickup. That afternoon, Flora was able to take her pick of fruit, vegetables, and pantry staples. The extra help in putting healthy meals on the table became a critical support.
But over time, Flora found more than just physical care. She found the emotional and spiritual care she didn’t even realize she needed.
At one of her regular visits to the food pantry, she was handed a flyer inviting her to one of CityTeam’s community groups. Not knowing what to expect, she decided to go. It didn’t take long for Flora to feel at home. But assumptions began to form in her once God entered the conversation. “I thought they were going to try and push me into attending church,” says Flora. “I didn’t want to be forced but still wanted to see what this was about.”
A relationship with Jesus was nothing like Flora assumed. She learned there’s so much more to God than just religion and head knowledge. “You can talk with Him and be open with Him,” says Flora.
A SAFE PLACE TO BELONG
Flora’s renewed faith in Christ affected her priorities, family, and parenting — for good. “I can see the changes, and my husband sees them too,” she says.
As her own needs were met, Flora became more equipped to meet the needs of women around her. She realized most of them, like her, are looking for a place where they can feel listened to. She says, “CityTeam provides that place.”
PLANTING SEEDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Helping a low-income family get the basic nutrition they need is just the starting point for so much good. And transformation for one starts a ripple effect of transformation in an entire community.
“It’s amazing because you wouldn’t think one little gesture of ‘We provide food’ could lead to this kind of change,” says Flora.
“You’re multiplying a little seed in one
person so it can grow.” — Flora
Thank you for planting seeds of change in our neighborhoods!
