Lexi's Story

Lexi had stopped her college education to be her grandma’s full-time caregiver. “She was all I had left,” says Lexi. The rest of her family had already passed. So when her grandma died, Lexi fell apart.

Vulnerable with grief, Lexi started a family with the man who would become nothing but a source of fear for four years. The night could bring anything — a drunken rage, a shattered glass, maybe even staring down the barrel of a gun. Lexi knew where her partner kept his firearms, and that standing up for herself brought threats.

“So I mostly kept quiet,” she says. Lexi missed her beautiful family — especially her grandmother who raised her.

“Every time I tried to leave, I’d be confined by threats,” says Lexi. One night, he crossed a line. “He tried to use my daughter as a pawn to get me to stay,” says Lexi. “I had to wrestle her out of his hands.

At the time, I was pregnant with our third. We got into a physical altercation. He started beating me, and I miscarried.”

A family friend made a plan.“I had to play it off as if it was just another day,” says Lexi. But the second he left for work, Lexi started packing and called her friend to come get her and the two girls. “When I left him, I had no family,” she says.

SECOND CHANCES CHANGE EVERYTHING

For a year, Lexi rented a room. But when that living situation fell out from under her, she and her daughters were homeless on the streets.“I was at my breaking point,” says Lexi. “I was going to call their father and say, ‘Honestly, you’re not the best choice. But I’m going to lose my daughters if I continue to have them on the streets with me.’”

But a nick-of-time phone conversation from a family friend led Lexi to CityTeam. “When we got here, we barely had a bag of clothes each,” she says. “I was in survival mode.”

“My grandma always said she sees me becoming a strong, determined, God-fearing woman,” says Lexi. “At the time, I didn’t really see it. But I am strong. I am determined. I am a God-fearing woman."

Through classes like Anger Management, Healing Trauma, Parenting with Love and Logic, and more, Lexi is addressing her pain at the root. She doesn’t have to worry about groceries, clean clothes, or finding a place to sleep at night. She’s disrupting the cycle of generational poverty.

“It means everything to me,” says Lexi. “I see my daughters building beautiful friendships. It’s a family now. And we didn’t have a family before.”

Today, Lexi is moving forward. She kickstarted her own baking business — inspired by her grandma’s sweets and heart for hospitality. Lexi says for everything she lost, God gave her back tenfold.“I was going to give up my daughters. And without my daughters, I would have given up entirely,” she says.

“I am thankful for the second chance me and my girls were given.
