Not long ago, Andrew worked in a machine shop. One day, a 4,500 pound piece of equipment fell on his leg. When doctors replaced his crushed bone with titanium, he was left in a wheelchair. Things got even worse when a faulty wheelchair ramp gave way, and he fell to the ground.
“I broke my kneecap,” Andrew said. “Pieces of it are still floating in my knee. The doctors can’t go in and repair it, because it will mess up the previous knee surgery that they already did.”
Unable to work, Andrew, who is in his 60s, is homeless for the first time. He came to Cityteam straight from the hospital.
“Cityteam Portland helped me when no one else would,” Andrew said. “They treated me with dignity and grace every day that I came into the shelter and dining hall. I am so thankful.”
While Andrew was staying with us, he was approved for affordable housing. He was excited to have a place of his own again.
