There’s one thing David knows he’ll always remember: sleeping on the frozen ground.
“It was horrible. It was late December. I was freezing. I will remember that forever,” he said.
David didn’t expect being homeless in Portland would be so hard. He’d slept on people’s couches before and he figured this wouldn’t be much different. But after days of walking around without food or rest, he knew he couldn’t keep it up. Not with his injuries and the cold weather breaking his body down.
He began asking people where he could get help. That’s when he heard about Cityteam Portland. He couldn’t get here fast enough.
“This place has saved my life,” David said. “It’s given me an entirely new outlook on everything.”
When David completes the recovery program, he’s hoping to stay on as an intern to learn what it means to truly serve others.
“I don’t need to buy a brand new car and an 80-inch TV,” he says. “I need to help people.”
