Devon usually woke up before the San Francisco Police Department could give him a ticket for sleeping in a doorway. But one morning he slept in. The ticket turned out to be the least of his problems.
“I picked my stuff up, put it in the grocery cart and I was walking off,” he recalls. “That’s when I felt my pant leg sticking to my kneecap.”
Devon looked down to see that his jeans were soaked with blood. He had a horrifying puncture wound on his kneecap. “It wasn’t a bullet,” he says. “To this day, I don’t know how it happened.”
The mysterious injury scared Devon. He had heard that Cityteam was a place to go for meals and help. So he showed up at our door – at 5am!
“I sat out there until I saw people coming downstairs,” he says. “When they opened the door, I told them, ‘I’m not leaving.’”
Devon is about to celebrate one year clean and sober.
“I’m building a personal relationship with God,” he told us with gratitude. “I’m realizing that Jesus Christ died for all of us.”
