When Bruce injured his foot, his doctor prescribed pain medication. Then, when he had trouble sleeping, the doctor gave him more medication. To ease side effects, the doctor added even stronger medication.
“I was basically a zombie,” Bruce remembers. When he took a list of his medications to a new doctor, he was shocked.
“He said that I should be dead,” Bruce said.
“He said there was no reason that somebody should be taking this much.”
But Bruce’s body had come to rely on the drugs. He was addicted. Soon he lost his
his job, his family and his home. He tried getting help, but ended up in the hospital because of severe detox withdrawals.
God Shows Up
At his lowest point, he cried out, “If there is a God, show me!”
Two days later, he started Cityteam’s long-term recovery program where he received mentorship, recovery classes, AA meetings, and so much more. He grew strong in his faith, and reunited with his wife and five-year-old daughter. When he was ready to go back to work, he received seven job offers!
Bruce will share his story with anyone who is interested. He can’t stop singing the praises of his new life.
“Cityteam gave me my life back,” he said. “I will do whatever I can for the rest of my life to help Cityteam.”
