Lacey has lived in more than her share of tents. In fact, she was living in one when she was five months pregnant with her baby girl.
“I had this fear. I wondered, ‘How am I going to be a mom?’” she says.
That’s where friends like you and Heritage Home came into the picture. Heritage Home is Cityteam’s home to help pregnant women overcome homelessness, addiction, and other hardships while becoming loving mothers to their newborn babies. It was exactly what Lacey needed.
You see, Lacey didn’t know how to be a mom because her own childhood was stolen from her when she was abused in daycare.
“I have really bad trauma,” she says. She turned to drugs when she was 12, trying to escape that trauma, only to have it multiplied when her own father abused her when she was 16. She ended up addicted, homeless, hungry and hopeless until friends like you showed her the support and help she desperately needed.
“I feel like I have a purpose now,” she says. “Everything is so good now. I’m looking into being a nurse, and my goal is to be a mental health counselor.”
Lacey also has embraced being a mom. “I’m so excited to pick her up from the nursery every day, and she’s so happy to see me, and she loves me and I love her. We have our own little apartment. We read bedtime stories.”
Without the help of friends like you, there’s no telling where Lacey and her daughter would be today. Most likely they would be separated, with her daughter in foster care and Lacey homeless, in jail or living in a tent.
Right now, we’re seeing the needs of women and children increasing. In fact, Cityteam San Jose’s Heritage Home is totally full and we have a growing waiting list.
We’re committed to doing whatever we can to help the most vulnerable in San Jose – including these women and children.
