CityTeam Home > San Jose > Recovery Program > Homelessness

Each night a hundred men will wait in line outside of our shelter for a meal, clean clothes, and a safe place to sleep. But it is so much more than that - it is a chance for CityTeam to speak with each one of them and discuss how they could change their life in the Recovery Program at CityTeam.

What Causes Homelessness?

Sharing a meal together often breaks the barrier of isloation and opens the heart and mind to change.

  • Job Loss
  • Barriers to employment
  • Lack of affordable housing
  • Housing budget cuts
  • Rent Control
  • Eviction
  • Drug abuse
  • Failed marriages
  • Abusive family situations
  • Release from prison
  • Runaways
  • Welfare cuts
  • De-institutionalization of the mentally ill

Who Are the Homeless?

A meal brings homeless people to CityTeam. Good friends keep them coming back.

  • Veterans of the U.S. military (over 30%)
  • The mentally ill
  • The physically disabled
  • The elderly on fixed incomes
  • Men, women and whole families
  • Single parents, usually women
  • Runaway children
  • Those addicted to alcohol and drugs
  • Immigrants, both legal and illegal
  • Transients
  • Recently released prisoners

God's good news can touch even the most troubled life.
