What is NIMS? National Incident Management System

In March 2004, the Secretary of Homeland Security, at the request of the President, established the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The NIMS is a comprehensive system that will improve operations through the use of the Incident Command System (ICS) and other standard procedures. This system is intended to promote unity between many jurisdictions in a time of crisis.

While most emergency situations are handled locally, when there's a major incident, help may be needed from other jurisdictions, such asthe state and the federal government. NIMS was developed so responders from different jurisdictions and agencies can work together through clearly defined procedures and chain of command regardless of where they originate from, and regardless of the size or cause the cause or size of the incident.
