Meet Patrick J. Robertson
President of Cityteam
Patrick (Pat) J. Robertson returned from Vietnam and married Kathy Mahler from Cullman Alabama in 1970. Pat and Kathy then attended Prairie Bible College in Alberta Canada and Pat has served at Cityteam in various roles since 1972.
Kathy and Pat's first summer with the then "San Jose Rescue Mission" was working at Arbutus Camp, later called Camp May Mac at Lake Tahoe, Kathy ran the Crafts Department and Pat did odd jobs and took Kids backpacking into Desolation Wilderness. Returning from Bible School the next summers Pat took various roles from Head Counselor, Program Director, Camp Director and then after graduation became Youth Outreach Director. Founders Lester and Pauline Myers retired in 1978 and Pat became Executive Director and later President of Cityteam Ministries. Pat and Kathy have three adult children and three grandchildren.
God began revealing to Pat and his team the growing needs of urban San Jose and other cities. Cityteam began expanding under the guidance of the Board of Trustees to other cities across the United States. First was East Palo Alto then off to Philadelphia Pa. and later to other cities. As Cityteam responded to the waves of immigrants from South East Asia they began to do Church Planting in partnership with Churches in Santa Clara Valley. Unaware at first that they were following the model of Jesus in Acts 1:8 starting in Jerusalem, then on to Judea and on to Samaria and then to the ends of the earth.
In 2002 when Pat read the book Good to Great by Jim Collin he felt God's leading to refocus the organization specifically on Disciple Making and helping people self-discover from God's Word the Bible, how they could passionately follow Jesus' three specific commandments: to love and obey God, love your neighbor, and go make disciples of all the nations. (Matthew 22:37, 22:39, and 28:19).
Today, Cityteam continues to serve people in extreme poverty and helps men and women transform their lives, their families and communities. With the help of volunteers and donors, Cityteam impacts the lives of over 500,000 people in the United States as well as ongoing vital partnerships in 42 countries around the world. Cityteam trains, equips, coaches and mentors local leaders to launch reproducing Disciple Making Movements. In the past six years, the organization has been blessed to train and equip over 20,000 leaders who have started over 18,000 new churches with over 600,000 new believers around the globe and here in North America. Pat believes that God is calling Cityteam to be a part of fulfilling Matthew 24:14.
Pat is currently writing a book entitled Father Glorified –True Stories of God's Power Through Ordinary People. Throughout his extensive travels, Robertson has seen first hand how God has used Cityteam to empower tens of thousands of ordinary people to become personally transformed local leaders and then be used to transform their own families, and communities. This book is published by Thomas Nelson and will be available in early 2013.Return to the President's Corner
